The problem

Link rot is real.
The research proves it.

Peer-reviewed research and large-scale data studies confirm what faculty already feel: web links in course content decay at a predictable, steady rate. The question isn't whether your links are breaking — it's how many already have.

20%+
Of LMS course links go dead within 2 years

A peer-reviewed study monitoring 515 URLs across three university graduate courses found that over 20% of links became nonviable within 24 months — at a steady, month-to-month rate of decay. Markwell & Brooks, J. Science Ed. Tech., 2002 ↗

38%
Of web pages from 2013 no longer exist today

Pew Research Center's 2024 analysis of nearly 1 million web pages found 25% of all pages from 2013–2023 are now inaccessible — rising to 38% for pages created in 2013. Course content linked a decade ago is statistically likely to be broken. Pew Research Center, May 2024 ↗

54%
Of academic reference pages contain a broken link

Pew Research found 54% of all Wikipedia pages have at least one reference link pointing to a page that no longer exists — and 23% of news pages contain broken links. Academic LMS content, updated less frequently, faces the same decay. Pew Research Center, May 2024 ↗

"Three years ago, I was a big proponent of putting hyperlinks into the class notes that I put online for students, but I've stopped using them as much. I tend now to only pick the ones that look to me like they will be most stable."
— Dr. John Markwell, University of Nebraska, quoted in Education Week following peer-reviewed research on LMS link rot (2002)

The time cost

Faculty are already stretched thin.
Link maintenance makes it worse.

Research consistently shows online faculty carry heavier administrative loads than their face-to-face counterparts. Manually hunting for broken links is invisible, unrewarded work — and it compounds every semester a course goes unchecked.

12.7hrs
Per week, per online course

A peer-reviewed study of faculty time logs found instructors spend a mean of 12.69 hours per week per online course — with 10% of that time on content development and maintenance tasks like checking and updating links.

Mandernach & Holbeck, Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration, 2016 ↗
150hrs
To build a new online course from scratch

Research estimates novice faculty may spend up to 150 hours preparing a new online course — making every subsequent semester of broken links a costly erosion of that original investment. Ongoing maintenance is rarely budgeted for.

Davidson-Barry, National Forum of Teacher Education Journal, 2011; ERIC EJ1124530 ↗
11%
Of faculty time goes to course administration

A large-scale time-use study of faculty found 11% of the academic workweek is spent on course administration tasks — including updating course web pages and content. Automated link scanning reclaims a measurable portion of that time.

Ziker, Time-use study of academic workday, Boise State Univ., Inside Higher Ed, 2014 ↗

Common questions
How much does the annual license cost?
Pricing is based on your total student enrollment — not the number of instructors or courses. Smaller colleges pay less than large research universities. We'll send you a custom quote after a quick 20-minute discovery call.
What happens at the end of the 90-day free pilot?
Nothing happens automatically — there's no surprise charge. At the end of your 90-day pilot, we'll schedule a review call to go over results together. If you'd like to continue, we'll set up your annual license. Your data is kept for 30 days after the pilot ends.
Does LinkGuard AI store our course content?
LinkGuard AI stores only link URLs and their scan results — not course content, student data, or instructional materials. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. We're FERPA-aware and can sign a DPA.
We use Canvas / Blackboard / Moodle — can we still use LinkGuard AI?
Yes. While LinkGuard AI is built for D2L Brightspace, you can also upload exported HTML from Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, or any other learning management system. We'll scan all the links regardless of where the course originally came from.
How many courses can we scan?
The free 90-day pilot covers up to 50 courses in one department. Once you move to an annual license, there are no limits — scan every course across every department, as often as you need.
What is the setup fee for the Managed Service plan?
The one-time setup fee covers installation in your D2L environment, configuration, staff training, and 90 days of hands-on onboarding support from our team. The exact cost depends on your institution's size and technical setup — we'll give you a clear number upfront.
